Microsoft discontinues the Xbox 360 gaming console production
After a madly successful ten year run, the Xbox 360 is officially saying goodbye. Microsoft is closing up shop on the Xbox 360. Microsoft Corp said on Wednesday, “the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old.” Remaining 360 consoles will continue to be sold in stores, and Xbox Live-related services and connectivity for current 360 users will continue to function, but if you’re looking to buy a brand-spanking-new 360 system, your time is limited.
The Xbox 360 was first released back in 2005. It proved to be a hit for Microsoft, cementing its position as a bonafide console maker, so far the console has sold more than 80 million units across the globe. Microsoft followed up with the Xbox One in 2013 and it has been well received as well.
Microsoft makes it clear that it’s only ending production of the Xbox 360, it’s not going to stop supporting existing Xbox 360s in terms of hardware and software, and Xbox Live servers for this console will continue to remain online so that players can indulge in online gaming.
Spencer also promises that additional games will continue to be added to the Xbox One’s backward compatibility list, allowing longtime 360 users to access more and more of their last-generation library from the newer console.
